Worcester Health Encourages Flu Vaccination

 
SNOW HILL, Md. (December 4, 2013) –In celebration of National Influenza Vaccination week that begins December 8,2013, the Worcester County Health Department urges all residents age 6 months and older to get vaccinated for the 2013-2014 seasonal flu.
   
Flu vaccine is available for all Worcester county residents ages 6 months and older at the health department locations in Pocomoke (410-957-2005), Snow Hill (410-632-1100) and Berlin (410-629-0164). Appointments are encouraged but walk-ins may be accommodated.  Hours of operation for the Berlin and Snow Hill Health Center are Monday-Friday, 8:00am -5:00pm, the Pocomoke Health Center is open Monday –Thursday, 8:00am -5:00pm. 
 
People age 65 years and older can choose to receive either a standard flu vaccine or the high dose flu vaccine which may result in a stronger immune response against the flu in this age group. 
 
FluMist is available FREE of charge to any Worcester County school age child in preK – 12th grade.  This vaccine is in limited supply and was provided through the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene School Influenza Vaccination program.
 
Worcester County Health Department will bill Medicare and Medicaid for flu vaccine.  Medicare or Medicaid cards must be presented at the time of service.  For all others, the suggested donation for the injectible flu vaccine is $15. No one will be denied service due to inability to pay.

Homeless Outreach Team provides resources and services to area homeless

Ocean City, MD- Launched earlier this year, the Worcester County Homeless Outreach Team (HOT) provides support services to homeless individuals within the county. Stemming from Worcester County’s Homeless Committee, through the Local Management Board, the HOT team is a partnership between the Worcester County Health Department, Local Behavioral Health Authority, Department of Social Services, Ocean City Police Department, Diakonia, Ocean City Crisis Coalition, and Atlantic General Hospital. Launched earlier this year, the Worcester County Homeless Outreach Team (HOT) provides support services to homeless individuals within the county. Know your risk and prevention strategies.

Snow Hill, MD- November marks National Diabetes Awareness Month and Worcester County Health Department (WCHD) is encouraging both those with diabetes and those at-risk for developing the disease to use healthy practices and prevention techniques this fall and winter. For those already living with diabetes, WCHD sponsors a free monthly diabetes support group monthly every third Wednesday, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the Snow Hill Library. A Registered Dietitian and Community Health Educator facilitate the support group and the monthly topics help participants reinforce self-management skills.
