November is National Diabetes Awareness Month and World Diabetes Day

Snow Hill, MD- November is National Diabetes Awareness Month and World Diabetes Day is celebrated on November 14. The Worcester County Health Department (WCHD) is encouraging both those with diabetes and those at-risk for developing the disease to use healthy practices and prevention techniques this fall and winter. For those already living with diabetes, WCHD sponsors a free monthly diabetes support group monthly every third Wednesday, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the Snow Hill Library. The support group is facilitated by a Registered Dietitian and a Community Health Educator, who tips and information to help individuals manage their diabetes and reinforce self-management skills.

The health department also provides Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) for individuals diagnosed with diabetes. The services provided by a registered Maryland-licensed dietitian for the purpose of disease management includes a personalized nutrition assessment and goal setting to help improve blood glucose management. MNT is covered by most health insurance.

“We know that as the weather gets colder, nights get longer, and the holidays approach, it can be challenging to maintain healthy eating habits and physical activity,” said Mimi Dean, Director of Prevention Services at Worcester County Health Department. “We offer a variety of free resources, including fitness and nutrition how-to videos, and diabetes prevention tips and educational material on our website and social media.”

Type 2 Diabetes can be prevented. WCHD offers Lifestyle Balance, an evidence-based program proven to reduce the risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes. The program encourages a healthier lifestyle and provides one-on-one support from CDC certified coaches for eating healthy, increasing physical activity, losing weight and establishing personal, healthy lifestyle goals. Lifestyle Balance is a 16-week program with 6 months of follow up sessions.

Worcester Health will host an informative presentation on healthy eating, physical activity, and diabetes prevention on November 14, 2019 at the Snow Hill Library from 1-2pm.
