February is Children’s Dental Health Month

Berlin, Md. (February 4, 2014) – February marks the celebration of Valentine’s Day and a month long focus on Children’s Dental Health. It is a perfect opportunity to use a new educational bulletin board titled “Love That Smile” downloadable from the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s Office of Oral Health website, http://phpa.dhmh.maryland.gov/oralhealth. The free bulletin board highlights proven ways to prevent tooth decay including proper brushing and flossing, oral injury prevention, nutrition, and the importance of fluoride and sealants. 

DHMH Releases Report on Continuity of Care for the Seriously Mentally Ill

Baltimore, MD (January 21, 2014) -- The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has released the report of the Continuity of Care Advisory Panel. At the direction of Governor O’Malley, the Department convened the advisory panel – which included state and national behavioral health experts, consumers and stakeholders – to make recommendations to strengthen Maryland’s public behavioral health service delivery system, improve health outcomes, and address deficiencies that lead to interruptions in care for individuals with serious mental illness.

TAXPAYER SUPPORT BOOSTS MARYLAND CANCER FUND

BALTIMORE, MD (January 27, 2014) –This tax season, Marylanders can join the cancer fight with a quick checkmark when completing their state income tax form, according to the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH). The Maryland income tax form provides state residents the opportunity to donate to the Maryland Cancer Fund which in turn supports cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment programs. Donations are its only source of funding. 

DHMH Warns of Potent and Deadly Drug Combination

Baltimore, MD (January 31, 2014) --- Maryland’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner
(OCME) reports an increase in the number of deaths linked to a potent and deadly batch of
heroin that is tainted with fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid, DHMH announced today.

New Report Provides Health Data and Resources for Maryland’s Black or African American Community

Baltimore, MD (January 31, 2014) — The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) has released a new report, “Blacks or African Americans in Maryland: Health Data and Resources,” the fourth in a series to raise awareness of health conditions and provide educational resources for minority populations in the state.
